The thing that bugs me about this particular book is that it feels as if there is a huge chunk missing. Debbie Macomber is usually
meticulous in briefly reprising characters' stories so that anybody picking up a book out of sequence has some idea where a character fits in, but here we have a whole plotline which seems to have occurred 'off-stage' when nobody was looking, and the characters (Mack and Mary Jo) just fall into the story fully formed, leaving you thinking hey, wait a minute, when did that happen and why didn't we hear about it? It's a shame because these are engaging characters, whose present/future story arc occupies quite a large part of this particular book, yet their backstory is completely missing, apart from a brief mention which leaves you wanting to know the details of how they came to be where they are.
