Every time I read an Ella Fields book she blows me away and I am so happy that Bittersweet Always does that and even more. Ms Fields does a great job depicting the pain of college and being on your own with a real struggle with mental illness and how that impacts everyone around you. So the combination of both is a recipe for an excellent story - oh and dont forget the romance as well.
Toby is a star on the football field - the problem is that he lets his temper and emotions get the better of him. As Toby struggles to control his mind he meets the beautiful Pippa. She is everything he didnt know he wanted until that first kiss. Now as his football career starts to unravel he is doing everything he can to told on to his relationship with Pippa until he loses both.
Pippa didn't want to fall for Toby - between his ego and reputation as big man on campus she knew he was trouble. The more she gets to know him however she realizes there is so much more to Toby then meets the eye. As Toby struggles with his demons Pippa struggles to keep him, can she?
I loved meeting Pippa and Toby in the first book in the Gray Springs University series in Suddenly Forbidden. So we knew there was something going on with Pippa and Toby we just didnt have the details - and now we do and so much more. Told in dual POV's and in parallel with Suddenly Forbidden (love this by the way) we get to have a front-row seat to Toby's struggles that is so real that it left me in tears on more than one occasion. We also get to see how Pippa handles her situation and see her feelings grow. This story is about love, loss and really, more importantly, redemption and the journey of who you are going to be at the end of it all. I loved every step along the way.
This is not only an excellent story but I think an important one - mental illness is part of millions of peoples lives in some way shape or form and the more we talk about it the shame diminishes even more. I admire Ms Fields for going there in Bittersweet and to help move this more into the light of day.
