The Best Ginseng is Grown For Six Years

Ginseng plants grow one palmately compound leaf (“prongs”) every year. Accordingly, it has one leaf stem in its first year of growth, two leaf stems in its second year, and so on, but after developing its sixth leaf stem, the ginseng plant mysteriously stops growing more leaves. With new leaves ceasing to grow, the plant’s growth peaks in the sixth year, when the ginseng root’s “head”, “body” and “legs” are developed the most evenly, and the root contains the most nutrients.
