"Creating Flat Design Websites" provides several examples, many of which use PhotoShop to prepare images and other presentation features. The book also introduces several other tools (many of them open source) that are useful to the developer of flat design websites.
"Creating Flat Design Websites" is not a lengthy book, but it seems about the appropriate length for a book on flat design. It introduces the principles of flat design and presents examples of application of flat design in a way that's easy (and quick) to read. The illustrations and examples definitely bolster the text's meaning to make it clearer how flat design is different from other design styles.
Packt Publishing provided me with the PDF version of this book that I reviewed, but I did not receive any compensation for this review.
Flat design websites are nothing more than a style of web that give you a certain look. Examples would be Amazon.com, Apples IOS or even the New Windows Interface. It is really nothing more than what is in right now. As soon as the style changes this book will be obsolete.
I think that this book is well done. It creates an introduction on what flat design is and then walks you through how to create a site in flat design. It it covers image creation, and code implementation for an entire website even with forms and text. It walks through CSS and is overall a complete book on flat design. It even covers sprite sheets to save on website load time.
That being said, with a little bit of internet searching you can research all the information in this book and while it is a well written book, and actually very informative your better off learning a bit about typography and CSS so you can implement a well designed website.
Although the book shows some nice examples along the way it doesn't always explain why some design decisions are made and the reasoning behind them, therefore many times the reader is left with no choice but accepting that without too much explanation. This gives the content a feel of a research more than that of a book.
If you are just looking for some introduction into Flat Design and your goal is to learn the basics of building websites using this design concept than the book it a good choice, otherwise if you look for something with more in depth explanations than you might want to look for something else.
Disclosure: I received a review copy from the publisher.
Chapter 2 Designing in Flat and Chapter 4 Designing Your Own Flat Website were my favorite chapters. Here, You learn by doing. Antonio Pratas provided a list of invaluable resources often used in a Flat design: colors, fonts, and grid frameworks. Also, the downloadable Photoshop resources from the Packt website helped me plow through the design exercises easily. I was able to produce good results with novice Photoshop skills because of the detailed instructions in the design exercises. Flat design is powerful because you do not need that much skill to come up with great results.
Flat is everywhere nowadays because of Apple's very successful iOS. It is valuable to learn the skills necessary to create pages, apps, and products following this design concept. This book will help you learn those skills quickly to stay current.
Overall, I'm happy with the results I got from reading and doing the exercises in this book. It is time well spent. But if you are an experienced designer, this book might be too easy for you.
I got my electronic copy for free from PacktPub to do this book review.
