OK, I'm just a pretty intellectually lazy Dad but after I've read enough of these with my 6 year old son even I realize - "Holy Moley! This is the most sexist thing I've ever heard!" I mean the mom in these is always the bad guy. The kid/protagonist is funny at first as a buffon but after awhile you realize he is essentially without morality. He's always cheating or skirting the rules, he's makes consistently bad choices. I mean that is his schtick, I get it. But it's brutally consistent. He NEVER learns. There is no development in his character. It's a bad role model for a 6 year old IMO. And as much as I've told him, "Gee son, this is a lesson in how NOT to act." I think eventually, he admires the kid.
Additionally, The mom ruins all surprises, the mom feeds them "horrible healthy" food, the mom keeps them from device time, the mom, the mom, the mom. There are a few Mea Culpas from the author via the kid, "I mean I love my mom and all but..." and then she just becomes the evil enforcer.
We are phasing this out of his library. We've told him... "Yup, you've read all of them."
