There is NO pinball action—just very hard pounding on the launcher to knock down targets, which is extremely easy to do. The kids have given up expecting any car to go down the descending ramp. They do like storing their mini cars on the set and using it for pretend play, but this toy gets zero stars for working as intended.
I wonder how long the toy will actually last—it requires very hard pounds to get any kind of action, and even then the action is very limited and not enough to pinball the cars back to start
Out of the box it will need to be assembled. It can be assembled without tools, but it takes about a half hour to assemble, and there are multiple stickers to apply. If you have an impatient child, you may want to do the assembly beforehand.
Once the set is assembled the pinball base is fairly large and does fold down for storage. It's made from brittle plastics, but feels sturdy enough. Included with the set is a small die cast version of Lightning McQueen. The car is nicely detailed and well made.
Using the toy is not the best experience. You place the Lightning McQueen car into a slot at the bottom of the set. Behind the car is a plunger that you activate by mashing a spring loaded button on top of the plunger. The button takes a lot of effort to give Lightning McQueen enough speed to get up and through the top of the set. It takes multiple tries to hit the spring loaded flaps at the top of the set. Once you hit all 4 of them a ramp will fall down and then you can shoot Lightning McQueen up the ramp and into the winner's circle. As you're attempting to do this you'll find that the car will flip over a lot or get stuck behind the flaps and have to be pulled out manually. When it works well, it's fun, but when it doesn't it's frustrating. Also it's noisy when you're mashing the button down.
You can buy additional cars if you want and there it a little drawer at the bottom to store them in, and an automatic chute to load them in where they will fall into place behind the plunger.
All in all... a fun idea, but flawed execution.
- Lightning McQueen car (this is a micro car, about 2” long and 1” wide)
- Plastic tracks and launcher
The idea of the play set is to launch your car and knock down obstacles like a pinball machine. This would be okay for preschool and kindergarten ages, but the plastic pieces are on the thinner side (this is not Little People thickness or quality). The car is also very small (a toddler would have a hard time with this).
I found that the obstacles were difficult to reset, and my kids could not reset it without my explanations/help. This is not an intuitive toy.
