The concept of all “calories being equal” is one that I disagree with. The idea that you can eat whatever you like provided it leaves you in a calorie deficit you will lose weight is not my experience. The author absolutely condones good, real, healthy food over others, but one look at the Facebook group shows people sharing low cal bars and snacks full of all manner of processed crap, which totally misses the point. I also have issue with the concept of ‘everything in moderation’. I do not think this is a healthy one for everyone. People who often have difficulty with overeating (particularly sugar and fat) cannot stop at one donut. This book does not take into account that everyone is different and has different triggers. It is written from the perspective of a healthy, fit, white man who I suspect has never struggled with his weight and believes calorie counting is all it takes.
This book also assumes that every individual body works the same, again, I totally disagree: I do better when I eat fewer carbs and less sugar. I also put on weight VERY easily and if I were to eat my so-called ‘maintenance’ calories as advised in this book, I put on weight. I know this and have been on this journey a while, so I know what works for me. This book is VERY one-size-fits-all (no pun intended). And as noted above, if you’re new to calorie counting it may well work for you!
There are also some basic errors on the calories listed on pg 155 which is disappointing and misleading.
TL-DR: It’s…fine.
