I was a little worried after my purchase because there’s a low star review—- seriously lady?! You’re worried about your child reading nonsense words?! Have you ever read Dr. Seuss before? He’s instilled the love in reading in children from making it fun and silly; so it creates a lifetime love for reading. I hope his imagination rubs off on your child for his sake!
But seriously great buy.
My negative review is because two of the books are utter nonsense and I really don't like them. I like the fun rhyming scheme of other Dr. Seuss books, but I guess I don't like all Dr. Seuss books. The worst one is "There is a Wocket in my Pocket". It is full of objects being rhymed with fake words. I don't need my two year old to be confused and learn what a "wocket", "zamp", "jertain", "bofa", etc are. "Fox in Socks" is awful too. This one has mostly real words but is has tongue twisters composed of gibberish sentences. Not only is it bad for my kid's development, but is torture for the parent to read.
The other two are okay. The ABC book has words with each letter and there are only a few fake ones in there. I would prefer all real words, but it is not excessive like the other book, so I don't mind it so much. "Mr Brown Can Moo! Can You?" is cute. It shows him make the actual sounds that real things make. This is the best one in the box.
I wanted to return these books since I dislike them so much, but I was going to have to pay for return shipping, so I decided it wasn't worth it. Instead, I am going to hide these books until my son is 5 or 6 because I want his language to be fully developed before he starts learning fake, made-up words. I want him to be able to identify that these words are not real and that the sentences are bad sentence structure and have the cognitive development to know that these books are "silly" and that is why this type of language is being used. My problem is that these books are being marketed as "bright and early" and are in board book form, which I associate with being made for 0-3 year olds.
