The book is titled "Map of the Soul" and it provides exactly that. Dr. Stein gives us a names and a common language to discuss the internal environment of the soul and its relation to the external world. I found the discussion of the relationships between the self that is known to us and the self that we present to the world, or our persona, particularly intriguing. Dr. Stein describes the persona as the mask we show the world and gives us strategies for negotiating a good relationship between who we are and what the world sees. That really resonated with me.
I couldn't help but think back to RM's speech to the United Nations where he talks about the relationship between how he knows himself and how others know him. He said that his heart stopped when he started seeing himself only through the eyes of others and then he could no longer see the stars. That made sense to me on a personal level. I went through a period where I lost touch with myself. Thankfully I found my way back. When reading this book, it stuck me how much of what Dr. Stein discusses was familiar to me from my own journey back to myself. This book provided me with a common language to describe how I found the path back to myself, how I was able to reconcile who I am with how others see me. Discovering this helped me to feel more connected with both myself and the world.
I encourage everyone to take the time to read a little of this book. I believe an introduction is available for free from the publisher, Chiron Publications, at no cost. It might be the beginning of your journey back to your true self. Once you learn your true name, the you that lies behind the mask, you may find it easier to love yourself. I have.
For someone familiar with the concepts and interested in seeing a full map of the Jungian psyche, a song by song Jungian analysis of the BTS album and short but deep explanations on things like the Shadow, Anima/Animus, Ego, Self and of course the Persona...this book is phenomenal.
Definitely going to be rereading and highlighting concepts out of this little gem for years to come
