Earthly Dyes for Heavenly Hair
These generous herbs -- henna, indigo, cassia, and amla -- have been used for coloring and healing since ancient times and offer a gorgeous, all-natural alternative to synthetic hair colorants. Easy to procure and easy to use (simply mix herb powder with a liquid to form a mud), all-plant dyes are gentle and safe, can be applied over chemical dyes, and actually nourish the hair instead of depleting it. Beauty expert Christine Shahin offers her special formulas for a broad range of hues from blond to black, along with guidance on how to cover gray hair and achieve unique color effects.

This gorgeous, detailed, empowering handbook shows us another way--natural plant dyes. This is a good alternative! Our sisters (and brothers) have been using these materials, in many cultures and lands, for centuries. The author clearly has plentiful hands-on experience, and the savvy but approachable text has an exciting message that inspires me and is sure to inspire others. (Salon owners: please offer us these products and recipes!!)
PS - I also appreciate the many photos of *real* people in these pages--young, old, various ethnicities, men and women.
I attended a wonderfully informative presentation by Christine at the Mother Earth Fair last year. I had been thinking of returning to Henna after decades (used it during my teens...), this gave me the enthusiasm to go for it. The book is very informative, the pictures beautiful and instructional, as they are accompanied by the receipts used.
I definitely recommend this as a how-to book, but also a great small coffee table style book....
My hair is dark, with lots of grey, especially the "sideburns". I contacted Christine Shahin with questions, not really expecting a timely reply...I was wrong!! She is genuinely interested in helping out and was a fountain of great suggestions, always encouraging me to let her know, how things turned out. I have actually been using her henna and indigo, with GREAT results. Knowing that the pigments are reliably and ORGANICALLY sourced is a bonus. Finding out, that Henna is a natural sun protector is just icing on the cake 9or as the case may be: Head!)
