A lovely read for a rainy Sunday or on a plane (one day... again). Softening the Edge is just what the world needs now.

It's a personal story about how leading with empathy can truly change trajectory - in both a people and business sense. Throughout, the human science and history behind empathy grounds the premise that we need empathetic leadership - and we need it now. This is backed with evidence of the business benefits of acting with empathy.

Most managers and business leaders are, at best, trained on their discipline - finance, operations, sales... but never trained on people. Never trained on how to truly lead and motivate people (hint: it begins with understanding them). This, Softening the Edge, should be required reading for anyone role responsible for leading people.

I've always led my business from an empathetic point of view and it's what I live and breathe, so to see someone coming from this perspective is refreshing. It took me 2 days to read cover to cover and I think this is such an important read for business leaders, or well anyone for that matter, as this perspective will bring about a much needed change. Read of the month !!! SOFTENING THE EDGE by Mimi Nicklin

A few days back, I accidentally got my hands on this book that my wife had ordered on line to gift a friend. The front cover of the book caught my immediate attention. The ninja mode in me came in to action to stealthily grab the book away from my wife’s sight.

The word Empathy has been a recent find for me( 4 years to be exact),thanks to Simon Sinek.

The Author Mimi has done exceptionally well to show the importance of Emotional Intelligence and Regenerative leadership at a time it is most needed.Face to face meetings have turned into virtual calls.The basics of human interactions have taken a complete turn,where caring for one another is to stay away. Well, at least 2meters apart.

The emphasis on Empathy in this book is a great read to leverage and develop in our professional and personal lives. It is a trait that we need to develop constantly.

The two differentiators about the book that also personally appealed to me :
1. Powerful Quotes & statements by influential people highlighted boldly every few pages that keep you visually and cognitively engaged.
2. Illustrative Images that relate to behaviors.

Empathy is not a weakness, it is a super power and this book brings the topic alive. Unfortunately some wanna-be, alpha male, angry leaders created a weird image of tough leadership. Once you realise that there is no aggression without fear, you will see all those "hardcore" people as scared boys, nothing more.
