I started looking around for competitors, and so very thankfully found the Minix Neo U1. Reviews were good, and the support forum seemed serious & sincere (unlike that for the other one), so I took the risk.
In less than 10 minutes, the Neo U1 was fully set up, and working perfectly. Not a single bit of frustration to get LAN file transfer working, either; just installed and turned on WiFi File Transfer (by DNL Media) and I was moving media to the HDD attached to the Neo U1! And at about three times as fast as the G-Box Q. With the G-Box Q, I had to try several file transfer apps, including ES File Explorer Pro, and nothing worked. It took me hours to figure out, including having to actually manually adjust a deep, down setting in the G-Box Q. Not with the Neo U1.
The Neo U1 has not frozen or even "burped." The remotes are very responsive (I bought the extra keyboarded "air mouse" remote - very useful, even fun). You can zoom through menus, where you - not the box - wants you to go.
The Neo U1 is a bit higher cost than the G-Box Q, as well as mainstream boxes like Rokus and Fires, but, if you value ease of use, and, most importantly, your sanity, simply pay the extra, so you can enjoy your media in minutes!
CONS: DO NOT INSTALL KODI FROM THE PLAYSTORE! It will "clobber" the DTS passthru. I learned this the hard way and only found out about the problem after going to the forums. Also, be aware that there can be regressions in the firmware upgrades. Only install if they fix a feature that you need.
I am on Firmware 005 and it is nearly golden for me. A few trivial bugs, but everything important to me works. Video performance is excellent as expected. DTS, Dolby 5.1, Dolby 7.1 and DTS MA HD 7.1 passthru are all working for me which is the trifecta and then some! A slight glitch is that the audio for DTS MA HD 7.1 is slightly out of sync. A minor manual adjustment at the beginning of the movie is all it takes for perfection.
