I started reading this book with low expectations, because this is not my usual read, so I was really shocked when I found it impossible to put down.
Unrivalled is the story of teens hungry for fame and attention.
Layla wants to be a reporter, but she needs the money to attend the school she wants. She’s the blogger behind The Beautiful Idols blog, a blog about celebrity gossip.
Tommy wants to be a guitar hero, but she came to LA for a very personal, and secret, purpose.
Aster wants to be an actress, but she wants to escape the life designed by her parents.
Madison Brooks is the hottest star of the moment, but her life is far more complicated than she lets on.
They are the main characters of Unrivalled, and their life converge when Ira Redman, the owner of the most popular nightclubs of LA, decides to host a contest to promote his clubs. The winner will be the one who brings the most popular stars to the club, the ones on his list, and Madison Brooks is the first of that list.
When Layla, Tommy and Aster enter the contest is when things start to get dirty. Every one of them has to use every trick to gain points. Their behaviors shift, their need to win gets the worst of them.
I enjoyed this book so much even though the mystery starts almost in the end of the book. But there are lies and secret in every page. This book is a fresh and fast paced read and while the more interesting character is the very Madison Brooks, every one of them has something to tell, someone to betray and secrets to keep.
If you enjoy books like Gossip Girl and I’m sure you’ll enjoy this book. The start is a little slow, but once you’re in, there’s nothing that will stop you to reach the end.
I’m so looking forward to next book in this series!
Unrivalled is quite a change from the Immortals series, there is nothing paranormal, and the characters are several years older, more worldly wise, and this isn’t a bittersweet romance.
But this still has the imprint of Noël’s easy to read writing, it still feel’s very much like Noël despite the distinct change in direction.
Set in Hollywood we are following three characters as they compete to win a nightclub promotion competition. It’s kill or be killed in this vicious fight to get the biggest and best stars on their guest list. But when the biggest starlet they are after goes missing they start to wonder if one of them actually did kill…literally.
Noël has created a murky world of backstabbing and mistrust. Our characters each go in different directions, but each blur moral lines while frowning on the others for their actions and questioning their own actions. At times they pull together while pulling away from each other.
This book is superbly formed, the mystery well built with the perfect cliffhanger at the end leaving you needing to read the next book. The chapter titles are song titles creating a really interesting playlist to go along with the book.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable and gripping novel full of intrigue, mistrust, fame, fortune, and aspirations. This is the murky world of Hollywood that the world doesn’t see.
A huge thanks to Alyson Noël and MIRA Ink for the ARC so that I could read and honestly review this book.
I enjoyed 'Unrivalled' very much. This was a story about a world so completely different from my own that it was pure escapism from start to finish.
Three characters, Layla, Tommy and Aster, themselves from very different worlds of money, expectation and employment, find themselves in competition as managers' of rival nightclubs. The competition? To bring in the most clientele in numbers and celebrity status.
As the competition progresses, it becomes evident that there are no rules and in their desperate efforts to win, their lives, reputations and integrity are put under the spotlight, and scandal begins to overtake them. But, all publicity is good publicity - isn't it?...
A great read for Young Adults. Looking forward to part two!
