Does it's job and is cheap
May 25, 2019
This is a generic smart power strip which connects using the Smart Life app. I was sceptical because it didn't have any branding or reviews but still bought it mainly because it is quite cheap. After getting it, I connected my TV, Xbox, sound bar and a bunch of other things to it and it works perfectly well. Easy to setup in the Smart Life app and once done I could easily link to my Google Home. Now everything is controlled by voice commands on my Home Hub and mobile phone.
Remember few things before buying this - 1. You need to have a very good WiFi modem which works in 2.4 GHz. I bought 2 units of this power strip due to number of outlets I needed and each power socket is listed individually in the app. I use the Google WiFi modem which is easily the best wifi modem that I have ever used. 2. It doesn't have individual physical switches on each socket. In case of internet failure or anything wrong with your modem or phone, then only way to switch it on is the 1 physical switch on the power strip. By pressing it you will switch on all the 4 power sockets together. Individual socket control is possible only through app and not physically. 3. The very first time you switch it on, it is already on the easy connection mode, light flashes continuously.
Cons - 1. It makes a click sound each time it switches on or off. I find it kind off creepy. Not a showstopper though. 2. The USB outlets can be used only in the Smart Life app, it doesn't get recognized by Google home. Not sure whether it would on Alexa. 3. It has only 4 sockets so you would need to buy more strips for additional devices. Only TP Link Kasa has a power strip with 6 sockets but I didn't find it with UK plug type which is used in UAE. Also that one is about 5 times price of this. 4. This one doesn't have power consumption meters built in. So you would not know how much power your devices are consuming.
